Introduction of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a constitutional body responsible for conducting civil services examinations and other examinations for recruiting civil servants in India. The commission was established on October 1st, 1926, as the Public Service Commission, and it was renamed as the UPSC in 1950, after the Constitution of India came into effect.

The UPSC conducts several exams every year, including the Civil Services Examination, Indian Forest Service Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, and others. How many stages are there in Civil Services Examination
The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages: the Preliminary examination, the Main examination, and the Personality Test (Interview).
Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary examination consists of two objective-type papers of 200 marks each, and it tests the candidates' knowledge of current events, Indian politics and governance, Indian and world geography, history of India and the world, economic and social development, environment and ecology, and general science.
Main Examination
The Main examination consists of nine papers of conventional essay-type questions, and it tests the candidates' ability to express themselves in a clear and concise manner, analyze and interpret data, and present arguments and ideas in a logical and coherent way. The papers are divided into two categories: qualifying papers and merit papers. The qualifying papers are two language papers (one of which can be English or Hindi) and an English paper, and the candidates need to score a minimum of 25% marks in each of these papers to qualify for the merit papers. The merit papers include four General Studies papers, two optional papers, and an essay paper.
Personality Test
The Personality Test (Interview) is the final stage of the Civil Services Examination, and it is conducted by a board of UPSC members. The interview is intended to assess the candidates' personality, communication skills, and suitability for the civil services. The interview is usually conducted in Delhi, and it lasts for about 30 minutes.
